Designs for the Classical Orders
As a traditional school, the University of Notre Dame’s Architecture program advocates a strong foundation in the history of architecture and building technology.
Consequently, the second year curriculum focuses on the history and use of the classical Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. In addition to hand-drafting and watercolor rendering skills, students learn the value of proportion and detail in their designs.
The Tuscan Pavilion is the first project of the year, and is situated on Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Quadrangle. Possible uses include gatherings before football games, dorm dances, and the upcoming 100th birthday of President Emeritus Fr. Hesburgh.
As the year progresses, students are encouraged to further develop the character of their designs through decorative details, such as the wall sconce proposed for a project using the Doric order.

The Ionic Archives project is used to introduce urbanism and the Beaux-Arts analytique.
Students must choose the orientation of their Archives among several important civic and commercial buildings downtown South Bend, IN. They must then choose an appropriate architectural character, and develop an analytique and technical building section using traditional building methods.
Since South Bend and the University of Notre Dame were founded by French priests, the architecture is distinctly French but incorporates bay rhythm and spandrel detailing similar to the neighboring buildings.
